Rising from the ruins - The name Zimbabwe

Great Zimbabwe

Modern day Zimbabwe is home to people from all walks of life and can boast of cultural diversity. People who were once in small groups are now unified under the banner of an ancient city. Zimbabwe is named after The Great Zimbabwe ruins, monuments of an ancient Great Zimbabwe Kingdom. The name Zimbabwe roughly translates the house of rocks.

The stone-carved Zimbabwe bird was found at Great Zimbabwe having been carved by Shona ancestors. These soap stone birds were valued by Europeans including Rhodes such that they continued to be iconic even in Rhodesia. Modern day Zimbabwe maintains the Zimbabwe Bird as a national emblem.
